Cannes is a french town situated in the department Alpes-Maritimes in the region Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. The citizens of this village are called « les Cannois ».
One of the best known seaside resort destinations of the French Riviera which is very famous for the International Film Festival, boulevard de la Croisette and of course magnificent Lérins Islands.
Cannes is situated in the region Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur and is a part of the Alpes-Maritimes department and is located in the north-eastern part of the Estérel mountains and stretches along the La Napoule Bay in the south. Nice is about 36,5 km away, Monaco - 55 km and Italian border only 60 km away.
Once a small mediterranean fishing village on the south coast of France, owned by monks in the 11th century, the history of Cannes is inseparable from the histories of the Sainte-Marguerite Island and Saint-Honorat situated a few hundred yards from the coast. And of course the history of Cannes - is really the history of the islands.
Cannes is divided into several quarters. Thus the Lérins Islands administratively belong to the commune of Cannes. Such quarters as la Croisette, la Californie, Le Palm Beach, Les Super Cannes and la Croix-des-Gardes, and of course le Suquet represent a complete list of the names that mean sun and french luxe.
La Californie is one of the residential areas the most luxurious and awesome of Cannes. The name of the quarter comes from the name of one of the states of the USA which is called « California », as both, they posses similar features. Situated in the eastern part of Cannes near the sea and on the hilltop, La Californie is peppered with luxury villas and gorgeous properties.
Cannes appears only in the Middle Ages and during the Ancien Régime from the 14-th to the 18-th centuries the town experiences a very slow rate of development, and especially during the 18-th century when Spanish and British troops both try to gain control of the Lérins Islands but are chased away by the French each time. And only in the 19-th century Cannes knows the rapid growth and development thanks to the Lord Brougham's legendary arrival in the town. The former Lord Chancellor of England so taken by this lovely site, its friendly inhabitants and gentle climate decides to settle in Cannes where he builds a magnificent villa. Following his example and attracted by the exceptional natural beauty and mild winter climate, a wave of British and european aristocracy soon began flooding into Cannes and building magnificent castles and awesome villas as their secondary homes for winter holidays. Like many other sea-side resorts of the French Riviera Cannes' growth is dazzling and the city begins welcoming prestigious guests, great aristocrats and personalities and of course, international elite. Sooner, in the middle of the 20-th century, Cannes is well-known all over the world for its International Film Festival and attracts the attention of the mass media and journalists from different countries. Not only the french but also tourists and guests coming from each corner of the world are fascinated by this renowned city of stars and celebrities.
